The City of Lake Elmo is pleased to announce that a Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) grant has been provided to conduct a lead service line inventory, now required of all city water systems. A service line is the pipe connecting the water main to the interior plumbing of a building, and it can be made of various materials including lead - commonly used prior to being banned in Minnesota in 1985. The City has partnered with engineering firm SEH to develop a lead service line inventory, documenting the location and material of all service lines. There is no safe level of lead, and developing a lead service line inventory is the first step toward replacing any lead service lines in the City’s water system.

If your home was built before 1985 and is connected to the City’s water system, be on the lookout for a letter in the mail to schedule an inspection appointment with SEH to inspect your service line. SEH staff will need to gain access to your water meter and the water line coming into your building. To help complete this required inventory, you can self-identify your own service line.
